01 Patch: Carbon Market Platform

Dec 2024

Staff Product Designer

https://patch.io/how-it-works

“Patch has been the expert partner that I've relied on to help enter the voluntary carbon market [...] And I love that Patch's software platform is now really an end-to-end experience, putting reliable, accurate data at the fingertips."

– Sophie Graham, Chief Sustainability Officer at IFS

Opportunity

Partnering with engineering and product, we rebuilt outdated industry workflows into a unified platform modeled on Patch’s deep carbon market expertise. Customers now get direct access to live project data, automated diligence, and seamless contracting, making it easy to compare, secure, and manage high-integrity carbon credits; all to help organizations confidently achieve their carbon sustainability goals and make real progress towards climate impact.

0→1 Ownership

Built the product from the ground up, mapped the customer’s journey, defined core information architecture, and shipped robust systems to drive trust and scale in a fragmented market.

Team Leadership

Embedded with founding engineers, product, and climate science experts. I drove design and engineering alignment via weekly working sessions and async prototypes for velocity, reliability, and auditability.

Customer-Driven

Ran validation sprints with early enterprise clients, iterating on workflow and data to resolve real compliance and purchasing pain points.

Impact

Shipped Patch’s core infrastructure, enabling onboarding in hours (not weeks), and powering multi-million dollar carbon transactions for market leaders. Major organizations such as Bain & Company, Persefoni, Workday, and Starling Bank now rely on Patch as their climate infrastructure for streamlined reporting, diverse portfolios, and scalable sustainability programs.

Result

Helped to establish Patch as the trusted, high-integrity backbone for modern climate enterprises, laying the foundation for rapid scale and industry confidence.

Platform Highlights

  • Credit integrity through automated diligence, science-based criteria, and market-wide data
  • Compliance features including built-in reporting for CSRD, net-zero claims, and simplified audit support
  • Portfolio oversight with a unified dashboard for tracking, import, reconciliation, and retirement audit trails
  • Sourcing supported by transparent project-level data, live inventory and pricing, multi-supplier offers, and credit default protection

Carby, the unofficial-official mascot of the design team

Challenge

When I joined Patch, our platform relied on outdated, inconsistent UI components inherited from previous products. This slowed down delivery and made it hard to maintain a high-quality user experience.

Advocacy & Alignment

I advocated for a clean slate design system and rallied support from product and engineering leadership, making the case for consistency, accessibility, and speed.

Building the System

In Figma and Storybook, I created and documented foundational components such as buttons, forms, data tables, badges, navigation patterns, templates, and flexible layouts.

  • I established a composable token system to keep colors, typography, and spacing scalable.
  • I authored clear UX principles and practical guidelines to help designers and developers build fast with confidence.

Impact & Adoption

We launched components just-in-time based on immediate team needs, which drove quick adoption and improved collaboration. Consistency across features and workflows increased measurably.

Lessons & Growth

Many lessons I applied at Patch came from my experience at Shopify, mentored by Kyle Peatt, Design Director. I learned that maintaining a design system is far more challenging than creating one, especially in fast-moving product environments. The key is balancing robust documentation with pragmatic, iterative delivery. Knowing when “good enough now” will create more value than “perfect later.” Kyle’s advice shaped my ability to foster a culture where teams trust the system but stay flexible as needs shift.

Results

As the continuing champion for the system, I coached the team, adapted to changing needs, and saw our design system become the backbone for Patch’s product experience and future growth.

“I really like it"

– Tobi Lutke, Shopify CEO

Opportunity

In February 2021, I was invited to join a small, focused team tasked with creating a new developer-facing product for Shopify.

Team & Collaboration

I worked alongside a Principal Designer and two Senior Staff Engineers, and Tobi, CEO of Shopify, as our primary stakeholder. We collaborated closely to move quickly from initial concept to functional prototypes. Our team operated like a startup inside Shopify, blending design, engineering, and product expertise.

Building Hydrogen

I guided the user experience for the Hydrogen CLI, shaped the Shopify app for managing deployments and hosting through Oxygen, and designed the default theme that ships with Hydrogen. I also flexed my graphic design skills by reviving Tobi’s iconic first ecommerce store, Snowdevil, creating the visual identity and art for twelve custom snowboard designs—one of which became a real snowboard I now ride at Vancouver’s local mountains.

Impact & Adoption

Our work laid the foundation for a product that now powers thousands of developer-built Shopify storefronts. The Hydrogen toolkit makes it possible for merchants and agencies to create highly custom e-commerce experiences with confidence.

Results

By helping turn a zero-to-one vision into a platform-defining product, I contributed to Shopify’s reputation for developer empowerment and flexible, modern commerce infrastructure.

04 Shopify: Product Models

Aug 2021

Senior Product Designer

shopify.com

Challenge

As a product designer at Shopify, I addressed the need for merchants to customize products, pricing, and availability based on customer segments, location, sales channel, or bulk purchasing requirements.

Evolving the Product Model

This project required updating Shopify’s deeply complex and mature product model. I was tasked with creating flexible systems for granular overrides and business logic, ensuring backwards compatibility and ease of use for millions of merchants.

Design Approach

To tackle merchant customization, I started on the ground with deep research and direct interviews to map pain points and opportunity areas. I uncovered where our product model held merchants back and where the biggest wins were.

From there, I partnered with engineers to break down technical barriers and explore how we could build flexible overrides right into the core system. I crafted user flows and rapid prototypes, running hands-on sessions with merchants and internal teams to pressure test ideas and keep the solution practical.

Knowing how fast the space was moving, I translated complex technical ideas into visual storytelling. I created presentations and artifacts that made the roadmap clear for busy stakeholders. Turning abstract concepts into compelling visuals and demos built alignment and accelerated momentum.

My focus was always on clarity, discoverability, and trust, making sure customizations would be as easy to use as they were powerful under the hood. By keeping the team and stakeholders in sync with visual communication and fast feedback, we turned a messy, high-stakes problem into an intuitive, scalable solution.

Results

By extending the core experience, we empowered merchants to address a wider variety of commerce scenarios. The work created a foundation that supports evolving business rules and customer needs, keeping Shopify adaptable for years to come.
